The festival has been famous for more than 30 years now - not only in France but also much further afield. The magical kite festival is one of the biggest kite meetings in the world, lasting for nine days. The greatest kite experts from all over the world gather on the idyllic beach to treat you to an astonishing, beautiful kite show!
History of the Berck-sur-Mer kite competition
The huge sandy beach of Berck-sur-Mer has always been attractive for wind-related sports. The first picture of kites on the beach was taken in 1887, and flying kites became increasingly popular in the years that followed. The wide sandy beaches, the peace and quiet and the open aspect of the sea also brought other kite enthusiasts to Berck. In 1987, they decided to fly their kites together on the beach of Berck-sur-Mer once a year and to enjoy the natural landscape and put on a small show. Since then, it has been an annually recurring event; it has grown into a festival of several days that attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world!
