Obertraun is a true paradise for hikers and mountain bikers. The choices are almost endless. Some examples of the summer activities in and around Obertraun: fishing, diving, cycling, (mountain)hiking, beach volleyball, archery, kayaking, hand gliding, paragliding, parachuting, canoeing, skittling, climbing, mini-golfing, mountain biking, rafting, horseback riding, rowing, swimming, tennis, running, Nordic walking and (multi-day) survival and hut trips. In addition, the region of Salzkammergut is the annual host of large international events.
In May, the Internationalen Sparkassen Hallstättersee Rundlauf is held, a half marathon around the Hallstättersee and in July, the Salzkammergut MTB trophy mountain bike marathon is organised with 4,000 participants from 30 countries.
In August, Obertraun has the Dachstein Extreme, extreme sports in the mountains, consisting of four disciplines (paragliding, running, swimming and cycling) with a team of four athletes.
Not for weak nerves! The Five Fingers viewing platform offers an adrenaline rush at the highest level. This is probably the most spectacular viewing platform in the Alps and it stretches out like a hand at a height of 400m above the abyss.
Every finger has its own feature. In the first, tourists are able to take a picture of themselves in a baroque picture frame, the second has a glass floor so you have an amazing look at the gasping abyss beneath you, the third has a slightly different form and stands symbol for “the freedom the mountains offer”, number four has a hole in the floor allowing you to look down and in finger five it is possible to look through a telescope for free. At night, the whole is illuminated fabulously. But it is not just the viewing platform, it is also the route to get there that has a lot to offer. The ride with the cable car to the mountain station is a true experience on its own.
