In the winter, the environment of Zell am See is obviously famous. Zell am See, Kaprun and Saalbach-Hinterglemm; they all are prime ski locations. You reach these ski areas by car or by ski bus (stops in front of the resort). In the winter, it is often even possible to reach the centre of Zell am See by foot through the ice on the lake.
Zell am See also has its own ski area. The Schmittenhöhe has a wide range of descents and can be called reasonably snow-guaranteed. Approximately 70% of the descends is located above 1,400 metres. Other ski areas are also not far away. In the cosy town of Kaprun, you are able to ski throughout the year on the impressive glacier. The region around the Maiskogel (approx. 1,700 metres) is more suitable for the beginning skier. There are also ample possibilities for cross-country skiers, varying from several marked trails in the valley to ‘höhen’ (high) trails on the Zeller mountain and the glacier. The ski bus will take you to your desired destination for free.
