Carnival in Maastricht is an unforgettable spectacle like nowhere else in the Netherlands! From the 11th of November, the people in Maastricht dedicate themselves to the preparations for carnival and spend a lot of time on their costumes, make-up and floats for the big parade. You can see the most special creations in the streets or during the parades. The so-called street carnival has several unique elements, such as the symbolic handing over of the keys to the city to Prince Carnival and the Boonte Störm (the big parade) on Sunday. During the street carnival, there are dozens of Zate Hermeniekes (local brass bands) that play festive music and provide a wonderful atmosphere. The city is decorated specially for carnival with the three traditional colours: red, yellow, and green!
