Explore the charming town of Heimbach
The charming centre of Heimbach is only an 8 minute drive from the hotel. Stroll through the historic town and climb Hengebach Castle, one of the oldest castles in the Eifel. This iconic castle was built in the 11th century, stands on a 33 metre high rock and offers beautiful views of the area. Do not forget to visit the Jugendstil power station and join a guided tour of the Kraftwerk. Heimbach is a small town but it has several fascinating historical sights.
Visit the impressive Mariawald Abbey
Just outside the centre of Heimbach, a 15 minute drive from the hotel, you will find Mariawald Abbey. This monastery was built in the 15th century and is highly recommended for a lunch stop. The monks serve pea soup and drinks from their own kitchen. They also produce their own liqueur, honey, chocolates and more.
Swim and relax at the natural swimming area Eschauel
On the opposite side of Lake Rursee, a 15 minute drive from the hotel, you will find the Eschauel beach with a beautiful beach club. Cool off in the water or enjoy a delicious cocktail on the terrace. This is also a great place to take a break during a walk or bike ride along the water.
Visit the historic Vogelsang IP camp
About a 30 minute drive from the hotel is Vogelsang IP, a former training camp of the NSDAP from the 1930s that now serves as a visitor centre and museum. Walk past the impressive buildings and learn all about the history during a guided tour or in one of the exhibitions. You can also climb the 173 steps of the Vogelsang Tower to enjoy an impressive 360 degree view across the surroundings from a height of 48 metres.
Fishing in Lake Rursee
There are countless peaceful spots along the 50 kilometre shoreline where you can fish. You can also rent a special one person fishing kayak directly in front of the hotel, allowing you to cast your rod from the water. To fish in Lake Rursee, you need a Dutch fishing permit and a local day permit which can be requested from the municipality.
Enjoy culture in Düren and Monschau
About a 40 minute drive from the hotel, you will find the towns of Düren and Monschau, two very different yet equally charming destinations. Düren is known for its lively shopping streets, cosy cafés and the historic Leopold Hoesch Museum. Monschau is loved for its historic half timbered houses, narrow streets and its location on the winding River Rur. Both towns offer a perfect mix of culture, history and regional gastronomy and are well worth a visit during your stay in the Eifel.
