The scenic village of Hallstatt is world famous and definitely worth a visit during your stay in Obertraun. This charming village is located between the Halstättersee and the Dachstein Mountains. With his church and narrow streets, the village is very photogenic. In the morning, you can take fantastic photos of the mist and the mountains.
Tip: The fairy-tale Hallstatt is also very beautiful from the water! Hire a boat, canoe or stand-up paddle board to see this beautiful vista with your own eyes.
Would you like to enjoy a breath-taking view of the Alps? Then visit the Five Fingers viewing platform at Dachstein Krippenstein. This is probably the most spectacular viewing platform in the Alps, towering over a 400-metre precipice. This platform was given this name because of the form of the structure that looks like a hand with 5 fingers. From the sunny terrace of Dormio Gasthof Höllwirt, you have a beautiful view of the Dachstein and the Five Fingers viewing platform.
Tip: The Five Fingers viewing platform is not suitable for people with vertigo. The trip using the cable car from Obertraun is already a unique experience in itself.
Nowadays, one of the most unique excursions in the area is a visit to the salt mines. The area around Obertraun is known for its salt mines. Salt has been extracted from the surrounding mountains since the middle of the Bronze Age. In those days, salt was a valuable commodity and was also referred to as the 'white gold of Austria'. You will find no fewer than three salt mines that are worth a visit in the surrounding area of Dormio Gasthof Höllwirt. They are located in Hallstatt, Hallein and Altaussee. Here, trains and slides take you on a journey of discovery into the history of salt mining in the Bronze Age.

You can also view the world-famous Hallstättersee and mountain massifs from above. To do so, visit the Skywalk. The viewing platform Skywalk can be found on Hallstatt’s salt mountain, immediately below the former defence tower, the "Rudolfsturm". The platform floats freely at almost 360 metres above sea level. The view of the UNESCO Hallstatt-Dachstein-Salzkammergut world heritage region is very impressive from here.
Tip: The Salzberg cable car takes you to the Skywalk in just a few minutes. Are you an experienced hiker? Then choose an adventurous hike up.
Do you want to find a cool spot in the summer? Or are you looking for a fun activity on a cloudy or rainy day? Then visit one of the caves in the Dachstein region. The ice palaces in the Dachstein are among the greatest natural wonders of the Alps. In the Dachstein Rieseneishöhle, a gigantic ice cave, you can experience the magical underworld of the Dachstein with spectacular ice sculptures and an impressive ice chapel in the company of an experienced guide. The Dachstein Mammut Cave on the Schönbergalm and the Koppenbrüller Cave in the valley are also among the most beautiful and longest accessible caves in Austria.
Tip: The average temperature in the caves is between -2 and +6 °C. Warm clothing is therefore recommended!
The city of Salzburg is less than a one-hour drive from Dormio Gasthof Höllwirt. It’s a beautiful city for a cultural day out. Salzburg is a city with a very rich history, full of buildings from the Baroque era. You will also come across Mozart and his music everywhere in Salzburg. From his birthplace, squares and statues to the world-famous Salzburg Festival. Other popular attractions in Salzburg are the film locations of the 'Sound of Music', the Dom and the Hohensalzburg Castle. In short, Salzburg is without doubt one of the most beautiful cities in Austria and definitely worth a visit!
