The Municipality of Sittard-Geleen, renowned for its local hospitality, is only 25 minutes by car from Dormio Resort Maastricht. The towns of Sittard and Geleen were merged in 2001 and as a result the two towns together became the second-largest town of Limburg, with 94,000 inhabitants. If you like impressive cultural heritage, Sittard-Geleen and its surrounding area is the right place for you. Whether you visit an old ruin or a beautifully restored stronghold; each historic building has an interesting story to tell. In Parklaan in Sittard town centre you will find Casa Mia, the smallest castle in the Netherlands. This former coach house is now a private house with a B&B. The birthplace of Sittard’s most famous resident, the comedian and singer Toon Hermans, also used to be in this street. Other interesting castles in the area are Obbicht Castle (photo), Born Castle (1150), which is a ruined castle with a beautiful park, Limbricht Castle (12th century) and Wolfrath Castle (1663).

There are also plenty of churches and chapels in Sittard-Geleen. The townscape includes a number of church towers. When you are strolling through Sittard town centre in the sunshine, you will come across the cooling shade of such a tower frequently. In Sittard’s historic town centre there are five different churches in close proximity to each other: St Peter’s Church, the Basilica, St Michael’s Church, the Protestant Church (Gruizenkerkje, the oldest listed building in Sittard) and Pater Karel Kapel.
