What to do in El Campello?
What to do in El Campello? El Campello is a coastal town on the Costa Blanca known for its fine sandy coves perfect for an amazing holiday during the warmer months. But this small enclave in the province of Alicante has much more to offer all year round. Staying at Dormio Resort Costa Blanca, you will be able to visit it comfortably due to its excellent location. If you still don't know what to do in El Campello, stay and discover the ideas we give you below.
Illeta dels Banyets and its watchtower
The Illeta dels Banyets is one of the most important archaeological sites in El Campello. It is a 10,000 m² area of land where remains from the Bronze Age, ruins of a Roman villa and materials from the Islamic occupation in the Middle Ages have been found. It also stands out for some rafts connected to the sea and carved in the same rock that created trap doors for fish.
In the same area of the village there is also a watchtower dating from 1555 to warn the population of pirate attacks. These watchtowers can be found all along the coast in a battery that served to communicate with each other, but the one at La Illeta stands out for its great state of preservation and value.
Undoubtedly two treasures of ancient history at different levels that are worth visiting and discovering in El Campello.
Voramar de les escultures (Sculpture Promenade)
The pleasant promenade that connects Illeta dels Banyets with Almadrava Beach is known as Paseo de la Voramar de les Escultures. This small walk, ideal for the whole family, allows you to enjoy incredible views of the entire coast of El Campello. In addition, you will find explanatory panels about the natural and anthropological characteristics of the area to enjoy a complete excursion.
During the walk, you will be able to see different sculptures with women as the main character, "the bather", "torso" and "girl reading", which are in perfect harmony with the landscape. A perfect plan if you don't know what to see near El Campello.
Tip: Take the Voramar walk at sunset. The sculptures form beautiful silhouettes as the sky darkens and you can enjoy the spectacular colours of the sky.
Port of El Campello and yacht club
For more things to do in El Campello, you can also visit the port, both the marina and the fishing port.
In the marina, the highlight is the Nautical Club, a facility with restaurants and where you can find out about a multitude of sea sports activities such as kayaking, rowing, fishing and sailing, among others. Many of these activities are available all year round, as weather permits, and are the ideal thing to do in El Campello for both adults and children.
Meanwhile, in the fishing port you will find a beautiful scene with a multitude of boats of all kinds. The fish market also stands out here, where fresh fish is auctioned and sold to the public on a daily basis, a traditional activity that has been going on for centuries and attracts buyers and curious onlookers.
Festivities in El Campello
If you visit El Campello in July, don't miss the celebration of the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of sailors, on the 16th. This is a very special day for the local people of the town, when they carry the virgin on their shoulders through the fishing port to finally carry her by boat in a procession on the sea. In the afternoon, the Virgin is returned to the hermitage in a beautiful flower offering ceremony.
If you visit El Campello in October, between the 10th and 15th, you can enjoy the Moors and Christians festivities which commemorate the battles between Christians and Barbary pirates from the 15th to the 17th century. A historical festival on the coast!
Tip: The fiestas in El Campello are a good time to make the most of the day and try some of the typical dishes such as Fideuà Campellera, a kind of paella made with the fat noodles typical of the Levant, fish and fresh seafood. Delicious!
