6 tips for activities in Alicante
The city of Alicante on the Costa Blanca has a great deal to offer. You can stay there for days without getting bored. Tip 1: Take in the culture at Santa Bárbara Castle
One of the largest medieval castles in Europe is located at 166 metres high on Monte Benacantil. Not only can you admire this castle from a distance but you can also visit it in person. There are various spectacular hiking trails to arrive at the top. If this is too much for you, there is also a lift that can be used. There is a breathtaking view of the Alicante harbour from the observation tower.
Tip 2: Shopping in Avenida Maisonnave
Avenida Maisonnave is the city's most popular shopping area. Here you will find the most popular brands such as Zara and Zara Home, Oysho, El Ganso, Nike, Massimo Dutii, Guess, Benetton and Mango. In addition to all these shops you'll also find the large El Corte Inglés department store, where you'll find everything from fashion and accessories to toys and sports items.
Tip: On Calle Alemania, just next to Avenida Maisonnave, you'll find K-Garden, a large Apple-reseller.
Tip 3: Take a a walk on the Explanada de España
The boulevard of Alicante, the Explanada de España, begins in the busy port area and goes from there along the coast. There are many pavement cafés, street vendors who sell drinks, snacks and handmade souvenirs as well as many palm trees along the beautiful mosaic promenade. The boulevard is also perfect for a wonderful evening stroll while looking out onto the beautiful Mediterranean Sea.
Tip 4: Visit the Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante, MACA)
The MACA museum is located at the Plaza de Santa María square in the centre of the city. This museum has beautiful modern artwork from the 20th century including from Pablo Picasso, Juana Frances and Joan Miró.
Tip: Combine this museum with a visit to the Basilica of Santa Maria. This beautiful basilica is a mere 3 minute walk from the museum.
Tip 5: Stroll through the Spanish streets of Barrio Santa Cruz
Strolling through the winding streets of the colourful neighbourhood El Barrio de Santa Cruz, you will find many picturesque squares where you can take a break at a pavement café and enjoy a good glass of wine or a delicious beer. The narrow streets are enclosed by cute little white houses and the flowerpots that hang on the walls along the street are typical of Spanish culture.
Tip 6: Relax at Playa de San Juan
Playa de San Juan (San Juan Beach) is Alicante’s most popular beach. The atmosphere is relaxed and there is always a spot where you can settle. The beach is very clean and the water is crystal clear. Windsurfing is very popular here as well as beach volleyball or beach football.
Tip: Hop on the tram that runs along the entire length of the boulevard. The tram will take you to the city of Alicante within 20 minutes. The tram stop is within walking distance of the resort.
